Vacation! And the new year too...
Jan. 2nd, 2004 01:04 pmThey didn't need the help that night, I was bummed.
The next option was to go into the ER with Lia Monday for a 7am-7pm shift. I said yes since I was DYING to get some ER TIME! I tell you, us new EMT's chomp at the bit for time to work with patients. At 1pm I was actually going to leave for home... But I enjoyed it too much... so I stayed past 3, and then past 5, and past 7 (when Lia left for home), and then past 9 to 9:30 PM. 14.5 hours... But hey, I DID take some time off... 10 minutes at 9am for breakfast. The rest of the time, I was taking the load off the nurses and making patients feel more comfortable, getting vitals, blood sugar levels, 12 lead EKGs, and just getting things for people to make them feel better. Escorting to and from Triage, in and out of beds and bathrooms, helping little old ladies. Just, stuff that makes you feel good.
I LOVE MY EMT WORK AND WISH I COULD DO IT EVERY DAY INSTEAD OF MY DESK JOB! Do you know what it's like to get a genuine thank you from a mother when she knows you're spending extra time and effort on making her and her child more comfortable when the child looks gravely ill? It's the best. It reminds me why I can put up with the junkies that want meds and the insurance companies that don't want you treated if it costs too much money... It's the people that thank you that keep me coming back for more.
New Years was fun, except Jess was kinda sad about us and for her friends that had all sorts of bad things happen to their family during the past couple years. She's sorta convinced that it's her turn for something bad to happen to her family. I hope not. I think it's just human to wait for the other shoe to drop. It's ok though. We'll all be fine no matter what.
