SURPRISE! Now go hunt that ELT...
Aug. 27th, 2004 11:04 amBut there was a problem, I was in shorts, t-shirt, and sandals. I had my uniform stuff, but no socks, no shoes LOL. So I did what any dedicated SAR person would do... I found a Payless Shoes off of Hwy 29 in the north end of Vallejo and bought some socks and shoes LOL. Then, I had to get changed... IN A PARKING LOT. Now, I thought about getting stripped to my undies and into my slacks/shirt, but really, would you want to see ME in my draws in a public parking lot? Even for 10 seconds? I was going to do it, but then I saw a family of 5 coming out of a 31 Flavors Ice Cream shop RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Payless... I decided against it, and wore my heavy cotton shorts under my slacks... for the next 6 hours LOL.
I nailed down that ELT inside of 40 minutes from the initial call. That's 10 minutes to drive into the area, 10 minutes to get new shoes and get changed, 10 minutes to get a code to enter Napa's secure area, and 10 minutes to be positive that I had nailed down the source of the transmission. In this case it was Silverado Avionics. A repair shop. They somehow activated the ELT aboard a plane they were servicing.
So over the next hour, more crews arrive... after I not only have gained access to the hangar but have secured the ELT that was going off. I have to wait for Charles, who was beat not only by me, but the aircrew that took the time to pre-flight the C-182 at Santa Rosa and fly down to Napa. Charles man, you gotta be faster then that, you can't let an AIRCREW beat you when you started first... Oh, the fun part was I turned off the ELT as people were trying to track it. I turned it on and off... It was wrong now that I think about it, but I was trying to reset it and it wasn't working. When we shut it off for good, Charles was really pissed because he couldn't find where everyone else was! It was awesome!
